Canada Visa Application from Bangladesh: Complete Guide

Planning to travel to Canada from Bangladesh for study, work or a temporary visit? The Canadian immigration process depends on the purpose of your travel. Choosing the correct application category, preparing the required documents and meeting Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) requirements are important parts of the process.

For students, the main immigration document is a study permit, while visitors generally need a visitor visa (Temporary Resident Visa). People coming to Canada for employment may need a work permit, depending on their situation.

NWC Education provides guidance to Bangladeshi students planning to study in Canada, including university and college selection, application preparation and study permit guidance.

Types of Canada Visa and Permits

Before starting your application, it is important to understand which Canadian immigration document applies to your situation.

Canada Visitor Visa

A visitor visa, also called a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV), may be required if you want to visit Canada temporarily for tourism, visiting family or friends, or certain business activities.

The visa does not by itself guarantee entry to Canada. A border services officer makes the final decision when you arrive.

Canada Study Permit

If you plan to study at a Canadian institution for more than six months, you will generally need a study permit.

To apply, you normally need a letter of acceptance from a Designated Learning Institution (DLI). Most applicants also need a Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL) or Territorial Attestation Letter (TAL), unless they fall under an exemption.

Since January 1, 2026, students entering eligible master's or doctoral degree programmes at public DLIs are exempt from the PAL/TAL requirement, although Quebec has separate provincial requirements.

Canada Work Permit

A work permit allows eligible foreign nationals to work in Canada under the conditions of their permit. The requirements depend on the type of work permit and the applicant's circumstances.

Work permits are separate from study permits and visitor visas, so applicants should follow the requirements for their specific immigration category.

Permanent Residence

Canada has several permanent residence pathways, including economic immigration programmes managed through systems such as Express Entry and provincial or territorial programmes.

Permanent residence applications have their own eligibility criteria, documentation and fees and should not be treated as a standard visitor, study or work visa application.

Canada Study Permit Requirements for Bangladeshi Students

If your main goal is to study in Canada, the study permit is usually the most relevant application.

To be eligible, you generally need to:

  • Be accepted by a Designated Learning Institution

  • Provide the required letter of acceptance

  • Provide a PAL/TAL if required

  • Prove that you have sufficient funds

  • Meet admissibility requirements

  • Provide biometrics when required

  • Complete a medical examination if required

  • Satisfy an immigration officer that you meet the requirements of the study permit

IRCC also requires applicants to demonstrate that they will leave Canada when their study permit expires, unless they obtain another legal status.

Documents Required for a Canada Study Permit

The exact documents depend on your personal circumstances, programme and application category.

Common documents can include:

  • Valid passport

  • Letter of Acceptance from a Canadian DLI

  • PAL/TAL, if required

  • Academic certificates and transcripts

  • Proof of financial support

  • English language test result, where required by the institution

  • Letter of explanation or study plan, where appropriate

  • Passport-size photographs or digital photo information where required

  • Biometrics

  • Medical examination documents, if required

  • Police certificate, if requested

  • Additional documents requested by IRCC

IRCC advises applicants to submit as many required documents as possible with the initial application because incomplete applications can delay processing.

Proof of Funds for Canada Study Permit

Financial evidence is an important part of a Canadian study permit application.

Applicants must demonstrate that they have enough money to cover:

  • Tuition fees

  • Living expenses

  • Transportation to and from Canada

  • Living expenses for accompanying family members, where applicable

IRCC requires applicants to demonstrate sufficient funds without relying on employment in Canada to meet the financial requirement. Applicants also need to explain how they plan to fund the full duration of their studies if the programme lasts longer than one year.

For applications submitted on or after September 1, 2026, the living-expense requirement for one applicant outside Quebec is CAD 23,448 per year, excluding tuition and transportation. The amount increases according to the number of family members accompanying the applicant.

Applicants should always use the latest IRCC financial requirements when preparing their application.

Canada Study Permit Application Process

Step 1: Choose a Canadian Institution

Start by selecting a suitable university, college or other Designated Learning Institution.

Consider:

  • Programme content

  • Admission requirements

  • Tuition fees

  • Location

  • Available intake

  • Co-op or practical opportunities where applicable

  • Post-study options

  • Your academic and career goals

Not every Canadian institution or programme is eligible for every immigration benefit, so students should verify the institution and programme before applying.

Step 2: Apply for Admission

Submit your academic application to the selected institution and provide the required documents.

If your application is successful, you will receive a Letter of Acceptance.

Step 3: Obtain the PAL/TAL if Required

Most study permit applicants need a Provincial Attestation Letter or Territorial Attestation Letter.

The PAL/TAL is normally provided through the province or territory where you plan to study and is obtained through the educational institution.

There are exemptions, including eligible master's and doctoral students at public DLIs from January 1, 2026. Quebec has its own requirements.

Step 4: Prepare Your Study Permit Documents

Gather your passport, Letter of Acceptance, PAL/TAL if applicable, financial evidence, academic documents and other supporting documents.

Make sure information is consistent across your application.

Step 5: Apply Online

Most study permit applications must be submitted online through the official IRCC application system.

Applicants should create and use their own appropriate IRCC account or application portal as instructed by IRCC. A study abroad consultancy should not be presented as the official application portal.

Step 6: Pay the Required Fees

The current study permit processing fee is CAD 150 per applicant. Applicants who are required to provide biometrics must also pay the applicable biometric fee.

Fees can change, so applicants should confirm the current amount on the official IRCC website before submitting an application.

Step 7: Give Biometrics

After submitting your application, IRCC may send you a biometric instruction letter if you need to provide fingerprints and a photograph.

Applicants should follow the instructions in the letter and complete biometrics at the designated Visa Application Centre.

Step 8: Complete Additional Requirements

Depending on your application, IRCC may request:

  • Medical examination

  • Police certificate

  • Additional financial documents

  • Additional academic documents

  • Interview or other information

If IRCC requests additional documents, submit them within the specified timeframe.

Step 9: Wait for the Decision

IRCC reviews your application and may assess your admission, financial situation, purpose of study, admissibility and other factors.

Processing times vary according to application type, location, volume and other factors. Applicants should check the current IRCC processing-time tool rather than relying on a fixed number of weeks.

Step 10: Travel to Canada

If your study permit application is approved, IRCC will provide instructions regarding your approval and travel documents.

When travelling to Canada, carry your passport, approval documents, Letter of Acceptance and other relevant supporting documents.

The final decision to admit you to Canada is made by a border services officer when you arrive.

Canada Visitor Visa Application from Bangladesh

If you are travelling to Canada temporarily as a visitor, you may need a visitor visa.

A visitor visa application normally requires applicants to demonstrate that they:

  • Have a valid travel document

  • Are in good health, where required

  • Have sufficient funds for their stay

  • Have ties to their home country

  • Intend to leave Canada at the end of their authorised stay

  • Meet Canada's admissibility requirements

Additional documents may be required depending on the purpose of the trip, such as an invitation letter, travel history, employment information or financial evidence.

Applicants should follow the specific document checklist provided by IRCC for their situation.

Canada Visa Biometrics from Bangladesh

Biometrics are used by Canada to help establish identity and support immigration screening.

If biometrics are required, IRCC will provide instructions after the application is submitted. Applicants should use the designated Visa Application Centre and follow the instructions in their biometric instruction letter.

Do not rely on an old VAC address published in an online article. Applicants should check the current Canada Visa Application Centre information for Bangladesh before attending an appointment.

Is Student Direct Stream Available for Bangladeshi Students?

No. Canada's Student Direct Stream (SDS) ended on November 8, 2024.

New study permit applications are processed through the regular study permit process. Applicants should therefore not prepare an application using old SDS requirements such as the former SDS GIC and language-test framework.

Common Reasons a Canada Study Permit Application May Be Refused

A study permit application can be refused for different reasons depending on the applicant's circumstances.

IRCC may refuse an application if the applicant does not adequately demonstrate matters such as:

  • Valid admission to an eligible institution

  • Sufficient financial resources

  • Compliance with immigration requirements

  • Genuine purpose of study

  • Required admissibility

  • Intention to leave Canada when required

IRCC states that an application may be refused if the applicant cannot demonstrate sufficient funds, fails required medical or admissibility requirements, or does not satisfy the officer that their main purpose is to study or that they will leave Canada at the end of the authorised study period.

A refusal does not automatically mean that every future application will be refused. However, applicants should understand the refusal reasons before considering another application.

How to Prepare a Strong Canada Study Permit Application

A well-prepared application should present accurate and consistent information.

Explain Your Study Plan Clearly

Your application should clearly explain what you intend to study, why the programme is relevant to your academic background and how it fits into your future plans.

Demonstrate Your Financial Capacity

Provide clear evidence of available funds and explain the source of those funds when appropriate.

Keep Your Documents Consistent

Names, dates, academic history, financial information and other details should be consistent throughout the application.

Provide Genuine Information

Never submit altered, misleading or false documents. Misrepresentation can have serious immigration consequences.

Apply With Enough Time

Admission, PAL/TAL where required, document preparation, biometrics and immigration processing can take time. Starting early gives you more time to address unexpected issues.

Can International Students Work in Canada?

Eligible international students may be allowed to work while studying, subject to the conditions of their study permit and current IRCC rules.

Work eligibility and the number of hours allowed can change, so students should check the current IRCC rules before relying on employment income.

Students should also make sure they continue meeting the conditions of their study permit while working.

Post-Graduation Work Opportunities

Some graduates of eligible Canadian programmes may qualify for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP), but eligibility depends on factors including the institution, programme, study duration, location and other current requirements.

PGWP rules have changed in recent years, so students should check the current IRCC eligibility requirements for their specific programme before making decisions based on post-graduation work options.

Admission to a Canadian institution does not automatically guarantee PGWP eligibility.
