Overview / About the Scholarship
The Clarendon Fund is a signature, highly competitive graduate scholarship scheme at the University of Oxford. Established in 2000 and welcoming its inaugural cohort in 2001, the fund was created with a clear mission: to break down the financial barriers that prevent the world's brightest minds from accessing an Oxford education.
Financed primarily by the rich publishing legacy of the Oxford University Press, the Clarendon Scholarship assists exceptional postgraduate students from all over the globe. For Bangladeshi scholars aiming to transition from local institutions or professional roles into world-leading research, this fund represents a premier, merit-based gateway into Oxford’s historic academic ecosystem.
Scholarship Value / Benefits
The Clarendon Fund provides extensive financial and community support, ensuring that Bangladeshi scholars can relocate to Oxford without financial stress. The core benefits include:
Full Tuition and Fee Coverage: 100% of the University of Oxford course fees and associated college fees are covered for the entire duration of the scholar's fee liability period.
Generous Living Stipend: Full-time scholars receive a substantial, tax-free annual grant for living expenses, accommodation, and food. For the 2025/2026 academic cycle, this stipend is set at a minimum of £20,780 per year (and scales naturally with inflation for subsequent years).
Part-Time Study Support: Scholars enrolled in approved part-time graduate programs receive a specialised non-fee modular stipend to cover their proportional study costs.
The Clarendon Community: Beyond financial aid, awardees gain automatic membership in the Clarendon Scholars' Association. This unlocks a diverse network of over 700 on-course scholars, providing access to exclusive academic symposia, career development workshops, and formal networking events.
Eligibility Criteria
Clarendon stands out globally due to its straightforward, non-restrictive eligibility guidelines:
Nationality: Open to citizens of all countries, including Bangladesh. There are absolutely no quotas, country-specific restrictions, or age limits.
Academic Excellence: Candidates must present a truly outstanding academic record. Successful applicants generally hold a first-class honours bachelor's degree or its international equivalent. While a cumulative GPA of 3.7 out of 4.0 is the standard benchmark, many selected scholars achieve even higher scores. Alternatively, an exceptional Master's degree from a recognised Bangladeshi or international institution can compensate for a moderate undergraduate performance.
Aptitude and Motivation: Evaluation is heavily weighted on the applicant's future academic potential, research capability (especially for doctoral tracks), and a clear, well-articulated passion for their chosen discipline.
Level & Field of Study
The scholarship supports all degree-bearing graduate courses at the University of Oxford. There are no subject restrictions:
Master’s Degrees: All full-time and part-time Master's programs like MSc, MSt, MPhil, MBA, MPP).
Doctoral Degrees: All full-time and part-time DPhil (Oxford's terminology for a PhD) courses.
Note: Non-degree courses, such as Postgraduate Certificates or Diplomas (PGCerts/PGDiplomas), are strictly excluded from funding.
Host University / Provider Info
The unique host and provider of this fund is the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom.
Review of International Higher Education in the UK:
While the Clarendon Scholarship is strictly tied to Oxford, it operates in a nation highly receptive to international talent. A comprehensive review of the UK higher education landscape indicates that out of the roughly 160 recognised universities in the UK, nearly all of them actively accept and sponsor international students from Bangladesh. Leading institutions like University College London (UCL), the University of Manchester, and the University of Edinburgh host thousands of global scholars annually, with over 13,000 Bangladeshi students securing UK study visas in recent years. However, because the Clarendon Fund is structurally integrated into Oxford's internal collegiate system, you must secure admission to the University of Oxford to be eligible for this specific fund.
Required Documents
No separate documents are required specifically for the Clarendon Scholarship. The Oxford admissions committee uses the exact documentation you upload for your graduate course application to assess your scholarship candidacy. For a strong application portfolio, Bangladeshi students should prepare:
Official Academic Transcripts: Detailed university grading records and certificates (translated into English, if applicable).
Letters of Recommendation: Typically 3 professional or academic reference letters from mentors who can vouch for your intellectual capacity.
Statement of Purpose / Personal Essay: A compelling narrative outlining your motivations, goals, and academic journey.
Research Proposal: Required for research degrees (DPhil/MPhil), illustrating the viability, methodology, and potential impact of your project.
CV/Résumé: Highlighting your research experience, publications, awards, or relevant professional milestones.
Proof of English Proficiency: Scores from tests like IELTS or TOEFL meeting Oxford’s higher-level language mandates.
