Rhodes Scholarship

Overview / About the Scholarship

The Rhodes Scholarship is one of the oldest, most prestigious, and intensely competitive international postgraduate awards in the world. Established in 1902, it enables outstanding young people from across the globe to undertake full-time postgraduate study at the University of Oxford. For Bangladeshi students, the Rhodes Scholarship represents the pinnacle of academic and leadership achievement, providing a completely life-changing opportunity to join a lifelong global network of public-spirited leaders.

Administered by the Rhodes Trust in Oxford, the scholarship is a merit-based award designed for young individuals with exceptional intellect, character, leadership potential, and a commitment to service. Important Update for 2026/2027 Applicants: Historically, students from Bangladesh applied via the Global Rhodes Scholarship constituency (which opens the award to candidates from non-established Rhodes countries). The Rhodes Trust has recently suspended the Global Scholarship route due to shifting strategic priorities. Bangladeshi applicants can still apply if they hold dual citizenship with an active, eligible Rhodes constituency country or can demonstrate specific inter-jurisdictional eligibility.

Scholarship Value / Benefits

The Rhodes Scholarship is a full-cost award covering all academic and personal living expenses. The total package includes:

Settling-In Allowance: A one-time payment upon arrival in Oxford to help establish your residence.

Eligibility Criteria

To be considered for selection, applicants tracking through an available constituency pathway must meet strict benchmarks:

Age Limits: Applicants must generally be aged 18 to 24 on October 1st of the application year (with slight extensions up to 27 for older graduates or medical tracks).

Language Proficiency: Higher-level English fluency to clear Oxford's strict admission criteria.

Level & Field of Study

Level: Valid for Postgraduate Taught (Master's) degrees ( MPhil, MSc, LLM) and Postgraduate Research (DPhil/PhD) programs.

Field: Open to almost any course offered by the university.

Exclusions: A tiny subset of professional programs, such as the MBA or Master of Finance (MFin), require separate consideration or have strict restrictions under Rhodes funding timelines.
