For the 2026/2027 academic year, the program prioritises athletes in Performance Sports, which currently include Women's Football, Men's & Women's Futsal, Men's Basketball, Netball, and American Football. However, exceptional athletes in any sport are encouraged to apply. The scholarship is available to both undergraduate and postgraduate students.
The benefits are divided into financial aid and performance services.
Scholarship Amount (Financial): Variable awards typically ranging from $665 to $4,000 (£500 to £3,000) depending on the level of competition. This is often paid as a reimbursement for sports-related expenses (travel, kit, competition entry).
Performance Services:
Free Gym Membership: Unlimited access to the $20M+ Herts Sports Village and The Oval gyms.
Performance Support: Bespoke Strength and Conditioning (S&C) from the "Performance Herts" team.
Medical Care: Access to physiotherapy and injury rehabilitation services.
Education: Workshops on sport psychology, nutrition, and anti-doping.
Academic Flexibility: Support for "dual-careers," allowing students to balance training camps and competitions with their lecture schedules.
To qualify for a Sports Scholarship, you must:
Levels: Undergraduate (Bachelors) and Postgraduate Taught (Masters).
Field of Study: Open to students in any academic discipline, not just Sports Science.
The University of Hertfordshire, based in Hatfield, UK, provides the scholarship. The program is managed by Herts Sport & Physical Activity Partnership and the Performance Sport department, which works closely with national governing bodies to develop elite talent.
Athletes must provide evidence of their sporting pedigree during the application:
Sporting CV: Detailing your competition history, rankings, and personal bests over the last 2-3 years.
Reference Letter: A formal letter from a National Governing Body (NGB) coach or a regional coach confirming your level of play.
Video Highlights: (Optional but highly recommended) A link to a "highlight reel" or game footage.
Personal Statement: Explaining how the scholarship will help you achieve your dual goals in sport and academics.
Step 1: Secure an Academic Offer: Apply for your chosen degree through UCAS or the UOH online portal.
Step 2: Contact the Sports Manager: Unlike academic scholarships, you must contact the sports department. Email the Performance Sport and Scholarship Manager
Step 3: Complete the Online Form: Once contacted, you will be sent a specific Sports Scholarship application link.
Step 4: Interview/Assessment: If shortlisted, you may be invited for an interview or a trial (if local) to assess your suitability for the performance squad.
Step 5: Deadline: Applications for the September 2026 intake usually close in February 2026.
Scholarship Amount: Variable, up to approximately $4,000 plus a support package worth an additional $4,000+ in services.
